Data Loss and its impact on businesses

Data loss can affect companies of all shapes and sizes and can have catastrophic consequences if critical data is impacted.

Have you considered what would happen to your organisation’s data:

  • If a fire destroys your IT environment?
  • If desktops and laptops get stolen?
  • If your data centre is struck by cyclones or water damage?
  • If your software is infected with ransomware
  • If an employee accidentally deletes data?

Lost data means lost profits and customers, as well as fines if regulatory compliance isn’t met.

How data loss can impact a V8 Supercar racing team

We had the chance to sit down and chat with  Jason Gommersall, iSeek CEO & race driver to discuss the impact that data loss can have on racing teams and their ability to prepare for races.

How would a loss of data affect your event preparation and race day performance?

"If you were to lose data, prior data, that would be tragic to be honest as that’s part of the intellectual property of the team and it’s something you develop over a period of time. This is a very expensive sport and to develop a car and a team over time and then to lose that data, it would be catastrophic. So if a racing campaign is built over a long period of time and success is built over a long period of time and it’s built on the prior data you’ve acquired."

Data Loss Prevalence in Today’s Climate

This past year alone has seen a number of large high-profile Australian businesses hit by data breaches and subsequent loss of data. As of today, there have been 24 high-profile data breaches that have affected Australian organisations and their customers since the start of 2018 and those are just the ones that made the news. [1][2]

The OAIC (Office of the Australian Information Commissioner) released a report in July of this year stating that they were notified of 242 data breaches from Australian businesses between 1 April – 30 June 2018. That works out to roughly 80 breaches a month around the country.

Instances of data loss have increased nearly 400% since 2012 and a staggering 71% of organisations are not fully confident in their ability to recover from the loss of critical data.[3]
